Remember To Water Your Roots

I recently ran an Emotional Intelligence 360 assessment for a new client. At the end, you have the option to ask 5 open-ended questions which I always do. Typically the last one I ask is:

What’s the single most important piece of advice you wish to offer this person?

In this instance, someone in the friend/family rater category responded with these 5 simple words:

Remember to water your roots.

I thought it was one of the most touching and insightful responses I’d ever seen.

One of the many beauties of metaphor is that the receiver can interpret it however they wish.

I have no idea who this person was or what they meant by the phrase “remember to water your roots” but it really struck a chord with me.

As is so often the case with the Coaching process, as the Coach you get just as much out of it as you give. More often than not the Coachee is inadvertently holding a mirror up for you just as much as you are holding a mirror up for them.

For me, this carefully considered heartfelt response which wasn’t even destined for me – remember to water your roots – added value to my own life.

For me, it means to nurture the things in my life which give me meaning, purpose and thereby inner strength. They are my friends (especially girlfriends), my love of learning new things and, last but by no means least, my Coaching work.

For others it might signify staying close to family, keeping yourself grounded or even being mindful of your basic needs – sleep, nutrition and hydration. Or a multitude of other interpretations.

But whatever it means to you:

Remember to water your roots.
